About

Joshua001My name, as you may have guessed at this point, is Joshua Mahar. As with any “about me’ page, there is always so much that could be said. There are some really important parts of my life, however, that I think are worth mentioning here to give you more of an idea about who I am, and what I am about.

First, I love my family. I have a wonderful wife and fantastic little girl, and one of my chief joys is spending as much time with them as possible. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do in photography without their love and support. I am truly blessed to have these two in my life: they are a gift I come to appreciate more every day.

Second, I desire with all my being, to be a fantastic artist. Photography, for me, is the medium I use to pursue my art, and it perfectly challenges me, pushes me and leaves me hungry to make the next great image. I want my work to reflect that passion with every shot I take. I’m not interested in the usual photography, but something that is honest and fresh, a glimpse into the heart of everything I point my lens at.

Third, I believe that our lives shape us, and help us to “see” in a particular way. I have always had a foot in the arts: I grew up drawing and singing, with alternating dreams of being a comic book artist or a singer. Choir won out at an early age. Music has always been really important to me, and in addition to singing, I have played guitar since I was 16. In early high school I showed an interest in photography and was given an old SLR from a family friend and began making images when I could. This introduction was enough to spur me into taking classes, and my senior year I was part of the photo journalism staff. After high school, photography took a back seat to other goals: I went to college to pursue a career as a pastor, and then once there I changed my mind and wanted to be a professor of Old Testament. This path led my wife and I to Massachusetts for four years while we worked on masters degrees. It was there that my love for photography resurfaced. I began to take our little digital point and shoot everywhere, making images on the beautiful campus. Soon my enjoyment of this hobby became a major distraction: I found myself wanting to go out shooting instead of reading. Eventually it occurred to me that maybe I wanted to be a photographer. After finishing school, our little family moved home to be close to our relatives, and to pursue this crazy dream.

Thank you for stopping by to see my work. Please feel free to comment on what you see here and tell me what you think. Also, I am constantly booking wedding and portrait shoots, and if you are interested in setting up a meeting please contact me through the contact section of the site (select the tab in the site menu at the top).
